Hello! I’m Emma Calabro.
I’m a fourth-year University of Iowa student from Ankeny, Iowa, studying Graphic Design and Entrepreneurial Management. I’ve worked at our student paper, The Daily Iowan (DI), for the past 2.5 years, initially as a photojournalist interested in local arts. After promptly becoming an editor, I grew an affinity for leadership. I try to lead through understanding, setting goals at the paper based on people’s interests, studies, and future goals.
Outside of the paper, I’ve always loved live music, spending every extra penny on concerts big and small. One of my favorite opportunities through the DI has been covering Hinterland as a reporter in 2025. Dabbling with writing while watching some of my favorite performers was an absolute dream.
I accidentally fell into photojournalism during my time at UIowa, but started school knowing I wanted to study marketing or design. I’ve illustrated as a hobby, but was in search of a logical application of my creativity. My first time truly designing was back in 2023 when I helped create a logo for my family friend’s small business.
I’ve loved piecing together my studies, real-life experience, and hobbies to become a stronger photojournalist, designer, and leader. I have so much room to grow, and I am excited to continue learning from those around me.
